Die Freifunk-Aktivistin Peggy Sylopp bewertete 50 Internet-Anwendungen für Geflüchtete mit Fokus auf Reichweite und Auswirkung. Basis waren Kriterien, die sie in Interviews und Gesprächen mit Ankommenden aus Afghanistan, Syrien und Somalia erstellte.
Dabei wurde die weitreichende Relevanz struktureller Faktoren und das Potential von kollaborativem Design und freier Open-Source-Software deutlich. Es stellte sich heraus, wie die Interessenskonflikte die strukturelle Entwicklung und somit die Gestaltung einer gemeinsamen digitalen Gesellschaft behindern.
Der Community-Netzwerk-Aktivist Keith Whyte wird eine Einführung in das Projekt Rhizomatica geben. Das Ziel von Rhizomatica ist den Zugang zu Telekommunikation zu erhöhen für die 2 Milliarden Menschen ohne bezahlbare Netzwerkabdeckung und die 700 Milliarden Menschen ohne Zugang zu mobiler Telekommunikation. Rhizomatica unterstützt Communities eigene Kommunikations-Infrastruktur aufzubauen. Das Projekt entwickelt open-source GSM-Technologie womit jeder eigene Mobile-Telefon-Netzwerke aufbauen kann. Rhizomatica organisiert und unterstützt den Zugang zu den Funk-Frequenzen für diese Gemeinschafts-Netzwerke.

Peggy Sylopp is a computer scientist, artist and Freifunk activist and has interviewed refugees from Afghanistan, Syria and Somalia, worked out their basic needs, summarized in six points, with the greatest impact on their initial situation. These formed the basis for a critical evaluation of existing internet apps for refugees.
Collaborative design and free/open source software are regarded as important allies in the realization of better connecitvity. It is especially interesting that the cost factor (as so often stated) is not relevant to the creation of our society. But "softer" and at the same time more structural factors, such as the connection of the users with internet and the tools, sustainability, easy adaptability, empowerment/stimulation for participation are essential.
Keith Whyte, a GSM community network activist, will introduce us to the rhizomatica project. Rhizomatica's mission is to increase access to telecommunications for the over 2 billion people without affordable mobile coverage and the 700 million with none at all by supporting communities to build and maintain self-governed and owned communication infrastructure. The project creates open-source GSM technology that helps people and communities build their own GSM networks. Rhizomatica advocates, agitates and organizes to gain access to spectrum for these networks and those that people might want to build in the future. They create organizing and sustainability strategies so that these networks can thrive without exploiting users.
